The Environmental Health Department has been in existence since when the Medical Staff Training School was established in 1984 which is now called Nigerian Navy College of Health Sciences Offa. The Department runs both academic and professional programmes in line with the provision of scheme of work from the West Africa Health Examination Board (WAHEB) and Environmental Health Council of Nigeria (EHCON). The accredited courses in the department includes Environmental Health Technology (ND and HND), Environmental Health Technician (Diploma) and Environmental Health Assistant (certificate). However, presently the department has only ND and HND candidates.
The department run and academic programme in line with the provision of curriculum form West African Health Examination Board (WAHEB) and Environmental Health Officers Registration Council (EHORECON) which include instructive both laboratory, clinical and field practice sufficient to graduate qualified Environmental Health Technologist who are capable of practicing contemporary Environmental Health Management procedures. The programme is designed to give the students an opportunity to learn and qualify in the Environmental Health Technologist Training, thereby making them relevant in the NN and Tri-service hospitals and the country in general. Furthermore.
Furthermore, the visit of both the EHORECON and the NBTE team to the school for final accreditation from 3 – 6 Dec 17 was quite successful.
During this period, several observations were made and the school with the support of NHQ effected the changes accordingly.
The Commandant of the school conceived and equip the Environmental department with required and needed equipment,
refurbish of demonstration ground building of incubator house, established of profession of Technician drawing and
an Audio Visual Studio, Pest Control, Museum & Quality Control/Monitoring laboratory.Consequently, the report of the
assessment team was forwarded to the school on the 4 Aug 16 indicating an official approval by the Board to admit and
commence the training of Environmental Health Technology at ND leading to HND level with effect from 2016/2017 academic session.
Also, the EHORECON visit was followed by the NBTE after an advisory visit in December 2017. Efforts are currently in place to invite the
EHORECON and NBTE for full accreditation and award of HND for Environmental Health Technologyprogramme in the school.
There are plans to accommodate other sister Services and other security agencies as well as civilians in future. In anticipation, the department has a blue print to provide different relevant training aid in the College such as Biogas plant, sewage treatment models and other waste management research facilities that could help in efficient training. Furthermore, the department is also anticipating that waste should be converted to wealth such as Recycling process which would serve as a means of promoting entrepreneurship concept in the department and the Environmental Health profession at large.
The course is currently been run within the College and the admission is opened only to Nigerian Navy Personnel. Prospective students must have also met the requirements of Environmental Health Council of Nigeria (EHCON) /NBTE and JAMB score as determined by the College.
The programme is for a period of 4 years, two (2) years for National Diploma and two (2) years for Higher National Diploma followed by one year internship program.
a. Immunization services. b. Sanitary inspection of premises. c. Disinfections and Disinfestation. d. Sensitization on health-related issues (Health Education). e. Inspection of meat (Ante-mortem and post-mortem). f. Food hygiene & food handlers screening. g. Water sanitation. h. Waste Management. j. Air quality control service. k. Practice of sanitary disposal of the dead body etc.
The basic requirement for fresh students who are desirous to studying Environmental Health Technology as a course is a minimum of 5 credits in basic science subjects in not more than 2 sittings in either of NECO/WAEC/GCE. Also, students are expected to have paseed the Joint Admission Matriculation Examination (JAMB). This requirement was proscribed by the NBTE for the purpose of maintaining the standard of the awarding of HND in Environmental Health Technology certificate after 4 years of the course.
