INTRODUCTION
Physiotherapy is a science based health profession that takes a 'whole person' approach to health and wellbeing which includes the patient's general lifestyle. A Physiotherapy Technician supports a physiotherapist with the planning and implementation of patient care. They provide administrative support and assist with assessing patients and establishing treatment plans and goals. Typical patients are those recovering from injury, illness or surgery. This programme of study is designed for prospective students who want to choose a career in Physiotherapy Technician Course. It therefore, requires from the students dedication, commitment, broad reading and ability to assume responsibility in physiotherapy. This programme shall expose students to basic sciences and medical science that will enable them appreciate the usefulness of physiotherapy and make worthy contributions to the restoration of Patients/Clients. It enhances Physiotherapy Technicians with relevant skills, value and knowledge in biological and behavioral sciences necessary to implement delegated tasks. They would be able to practice physiotherapy in any licensed physiotherapy clinic under the supervision of a qualified and Board certified physiotherapist. The Board recently upgraded the physiotherapy Technician certificate to Physiotherapy National Technician Diploma with the introduction of new curriculum for the programme.
A Physiotherapy Technician can work in any medical rehabilitation center, hospitals, physiotherapy clinics, long term care facilities/ homes for aged, sports medicine clinics, sports and training organizations, health care and public health services,e.t.c.
Threadmill, Bicycle ergometers, Therapeutic Ultrasound, Shortwave diathermy, Infrared lamps, Multi gym machine, dumbbells of various sizes, parallel bar, shoulder wheel, wall bar, Transcutaneus electrical stimulators, Wax bath, Sit-up bench etc.
The course is fully accredited by the Medical Rehabilitation Board of Nigeria (MRTB). Licensing examination is conducted by the MRTB. Candidates must register as full-time student. No part-time registration is allowed.
For admission, a candidate should have at least five(5) credits which must include English Language, Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry and Physics in any of GCE, WASC, SSCE, WAEC, NECO or NABTEB at not more than two (2) sittings.
The duration of the program shall last three (3) calendar years, which should be in six (6) semesters of thirty six (36) months for Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) candidates.
Physiotherapy Technicians have a great responsibility in enhancing improved physical health of patients/clients in accordance with the established clinical guidelines and evidence based practices. Physiotherapy Technician course is a career choice with great, yet diverse, opportunities.
