INTRODUCTION
Medical x-ray is an imaging technique using x-rays to view the internal form of an object. To create the image, a beam of x-rays, a form of electromagnetic radiation, are produced by an x-ray generator and are projected toward the object. The x-rays that pass through the object are captured behind the object by a detector (either photographic film or a digital detector).
The purpose of this course is to convey a working knowledge of radiological physics anatomy and physiology and other related courses, and to provide a base of knowledge from which practicing medical x-ray students can make informed decisions about technical factors, diagnostic image quality, and radiation management for both patients and personnel.
A medical x-ray technician can work in both public and private healthcare and can be physically located in any setting where appropriate diagnostic equipment is located, most frequently in hospitals. Their practice varies from country to country and can even vary between hospitals in the same country.
The College has adequate equipment and facilities for training. These include: exposure room, x-ray machine, darkroom, automatic processor, manual processing tanks, darkroom accessories and a working Radiology Department.
The course is fully accredited and certified examination conducted by the Radiographers Registration Board of Nigeria (RRBN). Candidates must register as full-time student. No part-time registration is allowed.
For admission, a candidate should have at least five (5) credits which must include English Language, Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry and Physics in any of GCE, WASC, SSCE, WAEC, NECO or NABTEB at not more than two (2) sittings.
The duration of the program shall last three (3) calendar years, which should be in six (6) semesters of thirty six (36) months for Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) candidates.
Medical X-ray Technicians have a great responsibility in performing x-ray examinations in accordance with the established radiation standards for the safety of patient and medical personnel. Medical x-ray is a career choice with great, yet diverse, opportunities.
